Systems Engineers require a good knowledge of both engineering and systems concepts. Inevitably, there will be few who are equally strong in both areas of knowledge. This paper offers a brief overview of the history of systems thinking, concentrating primarily on those areas which relate specifically to the understanding of emergent properties of systems. Whilst inevitably only a whistle stop tour of the subject the paper offers insight into both the depth and the breadth of systems knowledge available. It is intended as a starting point for those interested in finding out more.
