Traditionally, acquisition projects in the South African mining and ore processing industry have followed an approach geared towards employing mature and well‐known technology. Recently, De Beers recognised that this approach would not satisfy the needs of complex systems that employ more technically advanced diamond sorting technology. As a result De Beers established a new systems acquisition approach that includes systems engineering principles and related activities appropriate for projects of this nature. This new approach is the subject of this paper.
