Formal capability assessment is increasingly viewed by many as an essential element of a structured business improvement program, but many organisations are reluctant to take that first step because of perceptions of expense and complexity, and uncertainty of the value of the overall process. This paper recounts the experiences of the Author's organisation in its first foray into the world of formal Capability Assessment as part of the CMMI 1 pilot program. It recounts the process, records the resources applied, lessons learned, and “even better ifs” with a view to aiding that decision process for organisations that may be contemplating embarking on such a path.
