System engineering has its origins in the complexity business. The legacy is in the large unprecedented systems built primarily in support of telecommunications, defense, and space applications. As the products provided by other segments of industry become more complex, smarter, systems engineering by what ever name is probably a good idea. There are several parallel initiatives which do some of the same things ‐ but systems takes the most holistic view. This is important to the profitability of a company over time ‐ the decades that it takes to discover, mature and incorporate disruptive technologies. It is also important to companies that support many similar products over a life span dictated by the customer rather than the producer.
