This paper sets out the full range of activities involved in the British Army's business of supporting our extensive range of complex equipment. These activities are then set against the requirements of total systems engineering, that is the engineering and optimisation of both product and process. A number of shortfalls are identified, principally that there is little attempt to use through‐life systems engineering to achieve optimisation. A comparison is then made between Defence procurement and the operation of the normal commercial market. The demands of equipment support in this commercial environment are also addressed. A number of recommendations for improvement are made, principally the adoption of a more commercial approach to equipment procurement and support.
