This paper describes a process, based on systems engineering principles, that is being used by the UK MoD to select research to meet the changing needs of its existing land combat vehicle fleets and its future combat vehicle‐system procurements. This selection process addresses operational uncertainty, system complexity, international collaboration, changing procurement approaches and yet remains flexible enough to exploit technology opportunities as they arise. The research being managed encompasses system integration, technology development and ‘pure’ technology research.
