This paper discusses the lessons learnt from the introduction of the System Engineering process into a Steel Manufacturing organisation which had decided to develop a new technology. Some of the reasons for using the SE approach and the benefits obtained are discussed, as well as the pitfalls encountered. Many of the lessons are, we believe, applicable to Systems Engineering in general, and to commercial applications of system engineering in particular. A process approach is stressed.
