This paper reports the activities and current state of the INCOSE working group on principles. The working group approaches systems engineering principles as a trichotomy – three distinct views of principles: mathematical, philosophical and pragmatic. Working sessions at the 1997 INCOSE symposium developed an outline for a text, “Logical and Mathematical Principles of Systems Engineering,” a framework for foundation philosophy and two sets of pragmatic principles, all of which are reported in this paper.
