Team performance goals, in combination with process measurements, are essential in getting a group of people to produce extraordinary results. This premise was tested with a group of high school students preparing for the annual Academic Decathlon (AD) competition. Results speak for themselves. Previous team best was a 18th place finish at the state finals. The 1996 AD team finished fourth in Texas. This paper recounts the story of how metrics helped transform a disparate mix of high school students into a high performing team. Lessons learned are reviewed with an eye towards extending them into a business environment.
