This paper describes the need for a system engineering approach as a means to migrate the current rigid legacy system to a flexible distributed system architecture that can take advantage of the emergent client server technology. This approach focuses on a re‐alignment of the business processes as opposed to rehosting applications to a new technology. In doing so the enterprise becomes more aligned with the business objectives and the associated business objects. This modeling approach allows businesses to respond to dynamic changes in an increasingly more competitive environment.
