Many companies that develop products in the defense industry rely on the DoD Request For Proposal (RFP) process as the principal means for acquiring new business. While the process steps used by each company may vary in the details, the general RFP requirements demand that certain steps be accomplished by all participants. It is also at this early stage of acquisition where the Systems Engineer plays a significant role. This paper presents an outline of the process of responding to DoD Requests For Proposals (RFP's) and discusses the process steps that most naturally involve Systems Engineers. Finally, it points out the benefits of having a well‐documented proposal process.
