ad hoc : formed or used for specific or immediate problems or needs; fashioned from whatever is immediately available . Quite often we are faced with the need for an ad hoc computer‐based tool to eliminate the drudgery of boring, tedious, repetitious tasks. It could be something as simple as writing a macro in your current software application, or as difficult as the need to merge several different software applications. Other reasons for such tools could be: limited budgets, impending deadlines, resistance to change, unique processes/procedures, or a constant and rapidly evolving environment. Although there are advantages to procuring COTS software (eliminates development time, reduces internal maintenance, and assures technical support is readily available), there are times when it is necessary to develop an ad hoc tool. This paper describes an example of such a tool, developed from a very well integrated office suite software package.
