This paper describes a hybrid discrete‐event/continuous model of a Map Production System, encompassing all phases of the production process. The model was developed using an interactive prototyping methodology with Extend™, a commercially available simulation package for the Apple Macintosh. The modeling approach used a central hierarchical “Simulation Manager,” which distributed events and data to the appropriate submodels. The output of the model was validated using historical data and found to be generalizable for future system modernization. This modeling approach provides system engineers with information to aid in prediction and optimized design of future systems.
