Systems Engineering (SE) continues to evolve as a critical part of major systems development. This evolution takes place on two fronts, the first is in the development of new processes, procedures, and tools in support of systems engineering, the second is the increased application of systems engineering in development projects. This paper will describe the application of systems engineering processes and tools to a major development program for the US Navy (USN). It will illustrate some of the pitfalls which were encountered in actual applications of systems engineering and point out some of the short‐term and long‐term benefits to both the development organization and the customer.
