Architects, from the early Egyptians to modern systems architects, are specialists in the creation and building of complex structures, qualitatively different from those that have gone before. The architect, working with and acting as the agent of the client, creates and manages the design to maintain system integrity and to help achieve client satisfaction with the built system. This paper updates the ideas and conclusions of the teaching and study of systems architecting at the University of Southern California over the last six years.
