The need for effective automation in systems engineering has been a subtext of nearly every book on this fascinating subject since the early 1960s, yet systems engineering is still the least automated of the engineering disciplines. We are now at the happy historical position of having met the three necessary conditions for developing such a tool. We can describe the systems engineering process, the level of system complexity continues to rise, and the level of computing power is now sufficient and sufficiently wide spread. This paper, a distillation of the author's masters thesis, will describe these three areas and will describe the general nature of such an automation tool.
