The introduction of Mil‐Std‐SDD (to be named Mil‐Std‐498), “Software Development and Documentation”, in conjunction with Mil‐Std‐499B, “Systems Engineering”, will redefine the development, reuse, and evaluation of software throughout a project's life cycle. This definition is being driven in an attempt to quantify the software development process. The focus of this paper is to explore how these changes will affect the systems engineering process. The process of systems engineering as defined by Mil‐Std‐499B is compared to Mil‐Std‐SDD. An interpretation is presented of the boundaries of systems and software engineering activities proposed within the framework of these new standards.
