This paper describes the authors' perceptions of the functions, requirements, architecture, and performance of the program in systems engineering at Case Western Reserve University. This program is the first systems engineering department in the U.S. The program emphasizes the development of control theory and systems analysis methods, and their application to engineering problems. Because of changes in 1) the field of systems analysis, 2) our student body, and 3) the needs of research sponsors, we believe that it would be desirable to incorporate concepts of functional and requirement analysis in our curriculum.
