Due to recent changes, automobile engineering has reached a critical point requiring more formal methods. This situation is familiar to the aerospace industry where increasing complexity resulted in the formalization of systems engineering. The principles of aerospace systems engineering are the basis for automotive systems engineering. Several aspects must be changed to meet the automotive environment. Change agents must be identified and placed in strategic positions to implement systems engineering. A key ingredient to automotive systems engineering is the development of the automotive engineers with systems engineering capabilities.
