Traditional corrections for guessing tend to penalize the testee. Various arguments from a substantive and statistical point of view are proposed that would tend to alter the direction of most guessing corrections. A statistical procedure that takes an intermediate stance is discussed and its consequences for testing in general, and computerized adaptive testing in particular, are examined.
