Forty preschool, forty first grade and forty second grade children generated strategies to interpersonal problems that might arise within the context of a friendship relationship. Two types of problems were presented by having dolls act out an interaction: (1) a conflict between two friends over a desired object or activity, and (2) one friend evidences a lack of knowledge and must be taught a game or social norm. The number, type and predicted success of interpersonal strategies generated by the children were found to vary with age and the context of the interpersonal problem.
