Previous research indicates that the two positively correlated types of social desirability responding may be correlated in opposite directions with retest response variability on neutral social desirability items. The present study found response variability positively related to the Edwards type of social desirability and negatively related to the “lie” type of social desirability. These results are discussed in terms of some previous interpretations of the two types of social desirability responding.
