This is the report of a project that was undertaken to develop and validate a method for collecting and reporting information about students' preparation in English for college‐level work. Information was gathered from students through a self‐report inventory, Experiences in English. Then a prototype report was prepared in the form of a profile–an evaluation of a student's strengths and weaknesses in each of several major aspects of use of the language.
