A major difficulty in the design process of a local dimming system is to ensure a high image quality without annoying artifacts for any image content, with a high power saving at the same time. To solve this problem, a feedback method is proposed which dynamically adapts the control parameters of a local dimming system, based on the evaluation of criteria for the visual quality of the dimmed image. With these means a nearly constant visual quality for any image content can be achieved with high power savings of over 41%. In addition, a second method is presented which allows the display system to reach a desired mean power saving with the highest possible visual quality.
