Reliance on the lumen (lm) as the sole measure of lighting benefits (lm/m 2 and lm/W) can unnecessarily waste energy, increase costs, and reduce safety, security and visibility. Utilization of analogous benefit metrics in lighting standards that characterize human visual responses would increase the value of lighting for many applications.
