Abstract Recently, mobile displays especially for smartphones have been rapidly shifted toward higher resolution over 300 pixel/inch (ppi) with wider viewing angle, higher contrast ratio and slimmer border. From both viewpoints of human eye resolution limitation and current progress of communication infrastructure, displays with resolution of 500 ppi or more should be needed in the near future. We are now developing ultra‐high resolution displays, whose performance and fundamental technologies are described in this paper. Also future trend and challenges are addressed.
