This article describes a study of mentoring relationships for female retail protégés in cross‐sex mentoring relationships and female retail protégés in same‐sex mentoring relationships. The results of the study indicated no significant differences between groups on mentor and protégé age differences, protégé career level at relationship onset, company affiliation, mentor characteristics, benefits derived, problems reported, duration of the relationship, terminating causes, resulting feelings or reported value of the mentoring relationship. This research suggests that female protégés can and are benefiting from both male and female mentors due to overriding similarities in same‐sex and cross‐sex relationships.
