Although we aspire to understand and control ourselves and our environments, most people will acknowledge the influence of unforeseen events or encounters upon their career decision making. The focus in this article is on the development of persons within various life contexts, the recognition that individuals may prepare themselves to use unexpected opportunities, and the role of counselors in the career decision‐making process.
