A rapid method for micromalts from the early generation phase of a barley breeding programme is described, with which samples of very poor potential may be confidently rejected from the programme. The method is based on the hardness of the micromalt. Up to fifty samples can be tested in one hour by one operator, using relatively simple equipment.
