A preservative mixture consisting of ammonium pentaborate (8g/l final concentration), potassium sorbate (0.8 g/l) and citric acid (2.4 g/l) has been developed to allow the preservation of distillery fermentation samples at room temperature for several days prior to bacteriological analysis. The mixture is dispensed as a dry powder into sterile sample containers, and silica gel crystals are included to maintain the mixture as a free running powder. Samples are then added to the vials and the vials are well mixed to dissolve the preservative.
