The principal objectives of breeding programmes throughout the world are identified as the production of either high alpha‐acid or aroma types combined with resistance to the major pests and diseases. In some countries a further problem has been physiological adaptation to the environment while a recent project is the development of dwarf hops. One technique used to achieve these ends has been the use of triploidy. The overall effect of these efforts has been to reduce the area of hops needed to produce brewers' requirements.
