Colupulone, when refluxed in an acidic aqueous medium containing celite, gave four new compounds. Their isolation and physical properties are described and possible structures are suggested. These relatively unbitter compounds can also be formed by the hopping procedures normally adopted in breweries. The likelihood of their interference in analytical methods for estimating bitterness is discussed.
