Because of the valuable nature of hops it has become important to obtain close agreement between European laboratories in analyses for the chief constituents that are responsible for giving bitterness to beer—the α acids and related compounds. To assist in obtaining uniform results the following steps are recommended:– (1) Use of correct sampling conditions; (2) Use of correct weighing techniques; (3) Uniform use of only one method for potential bitterness analysis, renamed the Conductometric Lead Value for Hops. The above three steps re‐affirm and add to the recommendations in Analytica II; in addition it is recommended that:– (4) Check analyses should be made at regular intervals in each laboratory using the recently‐issued E.B.C. Standard Hop Extract on which a value of 14·4% should be obtained.
