Following preliminary tests, a mill on the Wiley principle has been designed and tested for the fine and coarse grinds of the malt extract estimation. It has been named the E.B.C. mill and will become official on 1st September, 1963. Tests of a prototype and of production models of the mill indicate that it achieves the desired objectives in giving greater precision to the fine‐grind extract estimation, and much greater precision to the coarse‐grind extract estimation. In consequence, the fine‐coarse extract difference becomes a precise and reproducible figure, which can reliably characterize the modification of a malt. Some of those making the initial tests have found difficulties in brushing out the mill; accordingly alternative methods are described. Although much more precise, the fine‐coarse extract figure is some two‐thirds of the average result by the older method.
