Yeast lipids have been isolated from whole cells by solvent extraction procedures. The components of the lipid extract have been fractionated by gradient elution chromatography on silicic acid columns, using chloroform‐methanol mixtures as eluents. Combined chemical, ultraviolet absorption, paper chromatographic and thin‐layer chromatographic techniques have been used to characterize the lipid samples. The results indicate that the neutral lipid fractions contained coenzyme Q, in addition to sterol esters, glycerides, free fatty acids and sterol. Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol and carbohydrate‐containing lipids were present in the phospholipid fractions.
