Directions are given for the preparation of E.B.C. standard units of formazin haze. Preparations of this haze are more stable than alternatives which have been proposed, they are more reproducible, and their light‐scattering behaviour is more closely analogous to that of beer haze. It is recommended that the standardized hazes should be used directly for eye comparison in simple types of haze meter and should be used periodically to check the calibration of the various types of photo‐electric haze meter. Because of the peculiarities of light scattering by beer and by formazin hazes, this system of standardizing overcomes most of the difficulties of comparison introduced by the use of different types of haze meter.
