Taking as the brewing literature not only those Journals of obvious direct appeal to the industry—whether as purveyors of news, providers of reviews or abstracts, or organs for the publication of results of original work‐but also relevant communications from the whole scientific literature of the world, it is argued that numerous avenues exist for approach by those who wish to keep themselves informed of current development. Approach may be made through the B.I.R.F. Bulletin of Current Literature especially for specific topics; reviews such as Malting, Brewing and Allied Processes provide an immediate means for surveying output in broader fields, whilst properly‐prepared abstracts allow a closer study of particular contributions; appeal to the original paper is ultimately essential for critical appreciation in any individual case. That part of the original literature which is concerned primarily with the brewing process and materials does not exceed some 250 papers per year, and, though expanding, is not doing so at any alarming rate. It would appear that, in different countries, the emphasis in brewing research lies in quite different directions, but broadly speaking a useful balance of communications is being achieved.
