Noting the importance of oil as a supplement to the supplies of fuel available in this country, the progress of its application in the malting industry is outlined. Particular attention must be paid to design of plant, to obtaining satisfactory atomization of the oil, to ensuring flexibility of operation, and to automatic control which regulates both air and oil supplies. Against an average utilization of 69 Ib. of solid fuel per Qr. of malt, comparative figures would be 475 and 4–5 gal. of oil, respectively, for high‐dried and low‐dried malts; lower figures for both solid and liquid fuel have been obtained on modern kilns incorporating recirculation.
