The results presented, from barley trials carried out in up to 18 centres throughout Europe and over 6 seasons, strongly support the view that the tendency to dormancy in barley samples immediately after harvest is a varietal character. It is suggested that an important aim of the barley breeder should be to produce varieties with the optimum degree of dormancy for the area where they are to be grown.
