A study of the germination characteristics of the barleys of 1955 has shown that, although a number of them either were water‐sensitive or had low germinative energies, a high proportion of these barleys were free from any dormancy. The incidence of dormancy in different varieties of barley is discussed; most samples of Herta, Rika and Provost were water‐sensitive, but samples of Ymer and Plumage‐Archer—although showing low germinative energies—in many cases showed little tendency to water‐sensitivity.
