NEW APPROACH TO THE ANALYSIS OF HOP OIL

Gas‐liquid partition chromatography has allowed the separation of eighteen components of hop oil obtained from ripe, undried Fuggles hops; the presence of a number of additional highly volatile compounds is not excluded. Detailed characterization of the individual components has not yet been accomplished, but the indications are that the principal compounds present include myrcene, methyinonylketone, β‐ or γ‐caryophyllene, and humulene, these together comprising more than 70% of the total oil of this hop sample. There appears to be no evidence for the presence of geraniol.
