When thirteen strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were grown in a medium lacking pyridoxin, ten of the cultures were found to give a positive reaction with the Ehrlich roagent for indoles and also to fluoresce with a blue colour in ultraviolet light. Detailed investigation of one culture indicated that the positive Ehrlich reaction was due to the presence of indole, tryptophol and an unidentified indole derivative, whilst the fluorescence was due to anthranilic acid, which subsequently was isolated.
