Maintenance of those non‐pathogenic yeast cultures which originally formed part of the National Type Culture Collection and which now comprise the National Collection of Yeast Cultures was undertaken by the Brewing Industry Research Foundation in June, 1951. Since then, the Collection has doubled in size by the inclusion of new cultures and both these and the original cultures have been authenticated. A description is given of the present composition of the Collection and of the way in which the strains are maintained. The methods and system of classification are described and the value of the individual tests is discussed.
