The colour intensity of laboratory worts of light and dark beers and of stouts, when expressed as the intensity or S ‐value of the tristimulus method, has been found to be linearly proportional to the visual measurement made in the Lovibond Comparator using the proposed colour scale of Bishop (this Journal , 1950, 373). It is accordingly also proportional to the new E.B.C. scale (see this Journal , 1952, 247). This good agreement between the objective photoelectric method and the subjective visual method appears to provide a strong recommendation for accepting the simple visual method for control work in the brewery.
