Despite the long history of barley, it is possible that present‐day breeding programmes may result in more far‐reaching changes in the nature of the crop than any which have yet been achieved. The varieties Plumage‐Archer and Spratt‐Archer, developed earlier this century as hybrids of selected local types, are of acceptable malting character but have been criticized by farmers on account of certain field characters. Many Scandinavian barley varieties have been tested in field trials and for malting quality, and a number of promising hybrids of these short‐strawed types with British high‐grade malting barleys have been produced. The agricultural advantages of a successful winter barley of good malting quality would be considerable, and hybrids from a type such as Pioneer may prove of considerable interest.
