Extensive selection from the progeny of a cross between Kindred (L) and Titan barley has resulted in the development of a number of promising new hybrids. Sufficient material was available in the F 6 generation to enable tests to be carried out for quality as well as for agronomic behaviour, although full‐scale malting trials have not yet been possible. Methods used in selecting the hybrids are fully described, and emphasis is laid on the necessity for testing for quality at an early stage in the breeding programme.
