Unfavourable weather conditions limited the sowing of winter cereals in the autumn of 1950, and spring sowing was retarded, being often made on poor seed beds. Nevertheless, conditions during the early summer were very favourable, promising some good cereal crops, especially on the lighter, chalky soils. August and early September were disappointing, retarding ripening and delaying harvest in many places. A final crop 41/2% greater than that of 1950 is expected and, taking into account the deficiency of the previous season, there should be just sufficient malting barley to meet requirements. Many samples contain immature grains, and moisture contents are high, but average nitrogen figures (despite district variations) are about normal and no exceptional malting characteristics are expected.
