The reduced acreage under barley and the unfavourable weather have led to a crop estimated to yield some 31/2 million qtr. less than in 1949, suggesting that it will be difficult to find the required full quantity of malting barley; the anticipated shortage has caused some increase in price. Some good samples of winter‐sown barley were obtained, but the early‐harvested spring barleys have been disappointing. However, most of the English barley‐growing areas have produced a proportion of choice samples.
