Summary Since Howard (J. Arnold Arb. 54: 380. 1973) did not designate a lectotype for the generic name Lepianthes Raf., it is argued that the first explicit and effective lectotypification of the name is Lepianthes granulosum (Ruiz & Pavon) Raf. (= Piper granulosum Ruiz & Pavon). Lepianthes Raf. is then a synonym of Piper L. and not a prior name for Pothomorphe Raf. (Piperaceae).
