Summary Manitz (1968) stated that 42 species names have been validly published in Dennstedt's “Schlüssel” (1818), but that another 48 names are to be regarded as “nomina nuda”. It is argued here that an additional 14 species names are validly published, shifting the balance to 56 compared with 34 nomina nuda. Although no generic names were validly published by Dennstedt himself, 3 were validated by others and 4 were applied subsequently to other taxa, whereas 2 of his genera were renamed by Rafinesque.
